elephant in the city...

a very unusual sight... for the past four years, so far, this is the only time that i've seen an elephant roaming the streets of the kingdom. I was on my way to the office when i took these photos right inside the vehicle i was riding (i wasn't driving). i minimized but was not able to completely remove the glare coming from the glass window of the car. this photo was taken at norodom boulevard, city of phnom penh, cambodia.

  1. hehehe...I truly understand why you paused to take pictures of this Jumbo. For me, seeing an elephant always evokes happy memories associated with childhood circus shows and visits to the zoo. It's one of those special animals that you don't get bored of even if you have already visited the world's most unusual zoos. (And even if you know the sad reason why it's being paraded incongruously along the asphalted streets of some third world cities.)

  2. a mammoth like animal roaming the streets is always a sight to behold... although, no childhood memories were evoked -- the first i've seen a live elephant was in 1999 when i went to bangkok... and i saw them in the wilds (relatively speaking) - not caged. yeah - the sad part -- it's really depressing - i could only hope that they are well taken care of of their mahoot.
